When to consider a Tummy Tuck?
  • Post-pregnancy excessive loose lax abdominal skin with stretch marks resulting in loss of self-confidence.
  • Post weight loss, excessive loose skin in lower abdomen not affected by exercise.
  • Protruding lax abdomen.
What are the types of Abdominoplasty?
  • Mini abdominoplasty
The skin incision is made in the bikini line and excess loose skin tissue is removed best suited only for those patients who had skin excess in the lower abdomen but otherwise good body shape.
  • Full abdominoplasty
Bikini line incision is made. The umbilicus is relocated. Muscle tightening is done till epigastrium along with liposuction of flanks to give the proper shape. This procedure also results in the removal of stretch marks present over the abdomen after childbirth with a properly shaped and toned abdomen.
  • High Tension Lateral Abdominoplasty/ Lower Body lift
The procedure is considered in patients who along with abdominal laxity needs improvement in flanks, thigh laxity, and buttock ptosis.
What to consider before surgery?
  • The best time to consider a tummy tuck is 9-12 months post-delivery.
  • Ideal to consider when a woman has had completed her family, a tummy tuck doesn’t affect conception but childbirth affects the results of tummy tuck (as abdominal skin again stretches during pregnancy).
  • It is best to quit smoking at least 2 weeks before surgery and till two months after surgery.
  • If a person is morbidly obese they must consult the plastic surgeon first as they may require weight loss surgery or dietary counseling first and months later when body weight falls one can consider for abdominoplasty to get rid of the extra skin fold.
What is the procedure involved?
  • Proper assessment and marking are done before the procedure.
  • To achieve a pain-free post-operative period epidural catheter is placed.
  • To achieve good results and minimal bleeding intraoperatively, we routinely infiltrate tumescent fluid and liposuction is done.
  • The skin incision is made in the bikini line so that it is not visible and is hidden even when the person is wearing swimwear.
  • In full abdominoplasty, another incision is made around the umbilicus.
  • Skin envelope is raised and muscle tightening is done to achieve the upper abdominal shape.
  • Naval is then repositioned at a new place.
  • Skin is stretched and excess skin is removed.
  • Two drains are kept usually. Depending on the amount of drainage, these are usually removed on the 2nd and 3rd day.
  • Suturing is done in layers, absorbable sutures are applied.
  • The umbilicus is stitched using non-absorbable sutures which are usually removed around the 10th day.

FAQs

What are the Post-op recovery and care options?

Usually, the epidural catheter is kept to keep patients pain free for a day or two. In most cases but also depending on the patient’s threshold, patients are up and about from day one. Drains are out by 2nd or 3rd day, and the patient can be discharged. A pressure garment needs to be worn for one month. Work off/leave is recommended for 1 week to 10 days.

How long the results last?

The results last forever if patients maintain body weight. But if pregnancy and massive weight gain occur, then there will be again stretching of the skin and loose skin appears. But usually, patients are so motivated after the surgery that patients tend to maintain weight and take care of themselves in a much better way.
