Lower Lid Blepharoplasty

Lower lid ages not as same way as the upper eyelid! As the lower eyelid starts to age, the excess skin, muscles, and fat seem to cause an ugly bulge that develops below the eye. The cause of baggy and puffy lower eyelids is due to factors such as herniating fat, excessive skin, and edema (water retention). Moreover, with aging, the lower eyelid sags down, causing more of the scleral show (white of the eyeball) that can also be corrected.

Looking into the mirror and if you always feel exhausted even if you are not, then the lower eyelid blepharoplasty can give you dramatic results.

When Should I Consider Undergoing Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty?

  • Lower eye bags.
  • Saggy eyelid.
  • Droopiness of lower eyelid leading to sclera (white) show.
  • Wrinkles around the lower eyelid.
  • Fat herniation in the lower eyelid.

The lower eyelid blepharoplasty procedure can be done under local anesthesia or IV sedation depending on patients' comfort. The procedure is an office or daycare procedure, and the duration varies from one to two hours, depending on the patients' surgical requirements. It can be done scarless through a transconjunctival approach, or sometimes excess lower eyelid skin needs to be removed through the pinch blepharoplasty technique. And in few other persons with droopy lower eyelid with the scleral show, lateral canthopexy needs to be done along with. The midface lift and nasolabial corrections can be done sometimes simultaneously with the procedure. The procedure can be scarless, as mentioned above if done transconjunctival technique.

Procedures That Can Be Combined With Lower Lid Blepharoplasty:

  • Canthopexy- to achieve lifting of the lower eyelid.
  • Mid facelift along with nasolabial fold correction.
  • Eyebag removal.

Results

You will get the refreshed look after lower lid blepharoplasty. The eye bags and fatty herniation is gone, and if there is skin laxity, that also improves. Overall you will get a rejuvenated look.

Risk And Possible Side Effects

Eyelid surgery has few complication rates if carried out well by an experienced surgeon in the accredited field. Rare complications include bleeding, bruising, infection, muscle damage. Possible temporary side effects are the inability to close the eye completely. There can be dryness, which can be taken care of by initial medication, but as the eyelids heels, the problem subsides in a few weeks.

FAQs

Is this a painful procedure?

Lower lid blepharoplasty is usually done under IV sedation or LA and is not a painful procedure.

Does lower lid blepharoplasty improve dark circles?

Many factors lead to dark circles around the eyes, especially under dark eye circles. And one of the factors is loose, wrinkled skin around the eyes and loss of volume at lead cheek junction. If these are addressed during lower lid blepharoplasty, defiantly, there will be an improvement in the under dark eye circles. And procedures like nano fat grafting and micro fat grafting can be added to improve skin texture.

What to expect in the recovery period?

Initially, there is swelling and bruising around the eyes.  Swelling decreases in 3 to 5 days, and bruising clears completely around 2 to 3 weeks.

How long the result lasts?

The patient usually achieves satisfying results 10-15 years post-surgery, but as aging is a continuous process, patients may require finer touchups 10-15 years past surgery.
